It ha...You should check out the Eberron conversion. It has the goblins and kobolds as a cult to the Dragon Below, believing that Orcus is an aspect of the aforementioned dragon. They think that Kalerel is a prophet of their god.
Kalerel is really an agent of the Blood of Vol, tasked with opening a rift to Mabar.
Nineran is a Dusk hag posing as an elf.
Agrid is replaced by the doppelganger Sil, who poses as Delphina. Irontooth is replaced with the dolgrim Ironteeth.
Valthrun also has ulterior motives...

With the conversion everything story-wise actually makes sense. For the sake of being concise I left out a lot of details. Now, all it needs is revamped encounters. Your suggestions are really good in that regard.
Can't wait to run it!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790030420507335953.post-24974727242589382662011-04-14T19:57:13.467-07:002011-04-14T19:57:13.467-07:00Renovating your own keep would provide a lot of in...Renovating your own keep would provide a lot of interesting adventure ideas, as well as open the door for politics: while the lord of Winterhaven might not mind the heroes who saved his town setting up kip to the north (and basically blocking off one avenue of attack), barons and lords over at Fallcrest might not take a liking to it...especially if none of the characters belong to nobility.

Plus, there's also the possibility that some of the Shadowfell will creep through the cracks. :-3David Guyllhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16299128722345607123noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790030420507335953.post-48623793160333950512011-04-14T19:49:05.164-07:002011-04-14T19:49:05.164-07:00I'm running it on maptools and I'm making ...I'm running it on maptools and I'm making a few of my own changes. My plan is to have them find the treasury after they kill Kalarel, the entire store of gold the keep had in its coffers, and then I task them with a choice. Either they can split the gold and keep adventuring as independent contractors. Or they can invest that gold into buying the deed to the town and the keep and work on renovating it, using it as a home base and then perhaps have adventures linked to them trying to forge a new kingdom in the Nentir Vale.Internal_Combustionhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10073983398956522469noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790030420507335953.post-40039901751789132882011-04-12T20:29:15.297-07:002011-04-12T20:29:15.297-07:00That sounds like a good idea...I have a convention...That sounds like a good idea...I have a convention coming up, so I won't be able to start it until the start of May.David Guyllhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16299128722345607123noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790030420507335953.post-38591656454727450632011-04-11T09:53:45.712-07:002011-04-11T09:53:45.712-07:00You should release a pdf guide for running this ad...You should release a pdf guide for running this adventure with your suggestions and the new monster math.Internal_Combustionhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10073983398956522469noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790030420507335953.post-91260652943452617332010-09-27T13:20:30.354-07:002010-09-27T13:20:30.354-07:00Good Suggestions. I definitely played up the "Cult" aspect of the adventure when I ran it the first time.

The early Cult leaders that the characters encountered, Agrid the gnome, Irontooth, and Nineran, all had distinctive cult tattoos (although Nineran kept hers hidden in town.) People started to catch on a bit when they noticed that Irontooth had similar tattoos to Agrid. Since the players were suspicious about the townsfolk from the start, I had Nineran murder someone on her way out of town, and the players tracked her back to the keep to set up the second half of the adventure.

I also explained things to the party in retrospect - for example, after rescuing Splug, the party learned that Irontooth had once been a member of his goblin tribe, but had converted to the worship of Orcus and earned the trust of Kalarel by moving the tribe from the mountains to the keep. Kalarel had promoted Irontooth to his inner circle, and Balgron had taken over as leader of the tribe.

I might try something similar to your approach for the next time I run the adventure. I think it's great that there are so many ways to run this module. As it's written, the ending is a bit of a dungeon crawl/grind, but I think your fixes might do a lot to address that problem.Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02001763786534985344noreply@blogger.com
