I played 3e since it came out and I still shake my head wondering how I could've been satisfied with so much crap for so long.Drakehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16622313946195004021noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790030420507335953.post-86808456784099851322009-06-21T22:22:06.092-07:002009-06-21T22:22:06.092-07:00I think 3e is a great game. It could also be used for gritty, dark fantasy; immersive exploration games; sweeping political epics; or whatever.

So, if you start with the assumption that the system is inherently action-adventure, when it is in fact slightly more general, any part of the system that doesn't fit within the action-adventure style of play will look wrong through that lens.d7https://www.blogger.com/profile/08635926744710532548noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790030420507335953.post-10182904930422495592009-06-11T02:07:57.954-07:002009-06-11T02:07:57.954-07:00Why?Why?David Guyllhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16299128722345607123noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790030420507335953.post-32853352997783774702009-06-11T00:33:58.496-07:002009-06-11T00:33:58.496-07:00@Antioch: It's funny that you repeat that &quo...@Antioch: It's funny that you repeat that "action-adventure" thing in the last comment, because it's the first thing I shook my head at in the article.

Sure, it's easy to assume that's what 2e and earlier were, and you *can* review them from that point of view, but it's necessarily going to miss the mark.d7https://www.blogger.com/profile/08635926744710532548noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790030420507335953.post-17624544033209215092009-06-05T17:00:26.816-07:002009-06-05T17:00:26.816-07:00@Spiralbound: Actually, I did do a review on OD&am...@Spiralbound: Actually, I did do a review on OD&D and Castles & Crusades! :-D

I dont agree that the style has necessarily change: all versions of D&D have been action-adventure fantasy games, its just that the rules have changed to (in my opinion) facilitate the genre.
That being said, I did get a lot of enjoyment out of 3E despite the bugs, otherwise I wouldnt have played it since its release in 2000.David Guyllhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16299128722345607123noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790030420507335953.post-89313889620332602342009-06-05T15:17:17.765-07:002009-06-05T15:17:17.765-07:00Greywulf's right; why should the old be protec...Greywulf's right; why should the old be protected from any criticism purely because it's old? If we establish that blogs are allowed to review games (and why shouldn't they be), why can't they review whichever games they want?

I don't even think it's a particularly harsh review, since I've seen plenty of grognards say the exact same things COMPLETELY SERIOUSLY. From the perspective of your average 3E holdout this is actually an extremely positive review, reminding them of all the horrible, horrible things they love about the game.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790030420507335953.post-17448909404292029692009-06-05T06:54:45.860-07:002009-06-05T06:54:45.860-07:00@Spiralbound: I agree with you, but the haters ten...@Spiralbound: I agree with you, but the haters tend to believe 4e is just like previous D&D and no substantive changes have been made that weren't improvements waiting to happen. In other words, they're not content to say their game is different, and that they like different kinds of games than most D&D players.Propagandroidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00537904971583892822noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790030420507335953.post-74691079886260029682009-06-05T05:15:35.870-07:002009-06-05T05:15:35.870-07:00@SpiralBound New reviews of old stuff always serve...@SpiralBound New reviews of old stuff always serves a purpose; it's good to look at what's gone before through the eyes of Now, and see how it compares.

Me, I think it's a great review!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790030420507335953.post-46031795827873068982009-06-05T03:50:50.008-07:002009-06-05T03:50:50.008-07:00Quick! Now someone needs to post a scathing review of AD&D 2Ed as a rebuttal, then someone else can snarkily review OD&D, and then another can criticize Chainmail! What "Fun"!!?! As amusing as these fake reviews may be, are they really serving any purpose? The different editions are different editions, intentionally designed for different generations of gamers and different styles of play. Of course, not EVERYONE is going to like ALL versions... Seriously, isn't that enough to say?Spiralboundhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01058997643317547694noreply@blogger.com
