Dungeons & Delvers: A Better Way to Randomize WP & VP

Awhile back RPG Pundit reviewed Dungeons & Delvers: Black Book, and one of his complaints was that the monsters have preset WP and VP values.

I didn't really see this as an issue. Beyond some iconic monsters I don't think players are actually going to memorize stats, and even then it's just been general abilities such as a vampire's level drain, a troll's regeneration, mummy's mummy rot, and a mind flayer's brain extraction.

But, I actually listen to feedback (when I remember it, at any rate), so we included this table in Red Book:

It doesn't allow for a lot of deviation but it's pretty quick to use, though I didn't specify what should happen to Small and Tiny creatures, who only get 1 VP per level, anyway. I suppose they'd just get 0.

But it's fine, because while working on Cowboys & Cthulhu, and to a lesser extend Oriental Dungeons & Delvers, I thought up an even better way, which puts Hit Dice back in the game. It's just, instead of rolling them and totaling it up, each time you check this table:

Playing a gunslinger? Roll a d10 and check the table. Sorcerer? That's a d6. I'm thinking braves should go up to d12, not sure, but it's mostly there because this will also apply to Dungeons & Delvers, specifically barbarians.

Easy, and while not as quick as just rolling and recording, it's still pretty quick. Saves on space, as the WP and VP columns from each class table can be removed, and each class will now just need a short "Hit Dice x" entry.

Monsters can similarly be handled by having a Hit Die entry (ie, mohrgs would have 6d6), along with average WP and VP results to speed things up (or in case you don't want to figure out the WP/VP for twenty goblins that will probably die in one hit, anyway).
